Magnetic Island is located within Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and enjoys consistent warm water temperatures around 20°C. Diving is exceptional here on Magnetic, with opportunities available for both beginners and experts to explore an underwater world of canyons, swim throughs, caves, gullies, and incredible wall dives. In amongst the multitude of bays and rocky headlands, the island is fringed with coral reefs that teem with colourful tropical fish and other marine life.
At Nelly Bay, you will find the Shipwreck Trail, a marked diving and snorkeling route designated by surface floats. For the true enthusiast, a ‘must do’ is the Yongala Wreck, accessible by a short day trip to the outer reef. Sunk in 1911 by a tropical cyclone, Yongala is considered by many as one of the top five wreck dive sites in the world. Other diving hotspots on the island include Florence Bay, Alma Bay, and Geoffrey Bay. Equipment rental is readily available, as well as rentals for the day or longer onboard sailboats, live-aboard dive crafts, and Whitsunday cruises.
Not a diver yet? Well Magnetic Island is the perfect place to learn! Affordable, quality, beginner’s classes as well as speciality courses for continuing dive education are all available with certified PADI instructors.
